Wednesday, April 4, 2012: It was a bright sunny 50 degree morning. Then police blocked off Jackson Street near the Brainerd Civic Center. What was going on? |
The answer: A car hit a power pole at 9:15 AM. The collision sheared the pole off at the base, pushing the bottom of the pole about four feet forward. Simultaneous with all of this, the lights went out at Gilbert Lodge. Fortunately the automatic backup power generator started and ran to keep the lodge going. A hundred or more homes were affected along Riverside Drive and Northtown. |
A closer look at the grizzly scene. Just like in the movies, the pole was almost dead center in the front of the car. Fortunately the driver got out with only minor injuries. |
The Brainerd City Water and Light Department showed up to take down the broken pole and put a new one. |
What turned the accident turn into a four hour power outage was the repair and cleanup. High voltage buried cables that run up the pole and take power from overhead power lines were damaged and protective fuses opened. Crews had to repair the cables before even attempting to connect them to the new pole. |
