Saturday, July 9, 2011: There was a gathering at Camp Ripley for American Civil War buffs. A new exhibit, depicting life in that war, was unveiled at the Minnesota Military Museum there on the base. |
Back in the Civil War days, there was no radio or recorded music.
Instead, music was created live. These two period-dressed entertainers started their program with a stirring rendition of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." |
Civil War re-enactors from across the state showed the life of
soldiers from that era.
The Civil War went from April of 1861 to April of 1865. The Dakota War with Indians raged in Minnesota from August to December of 1862. That kept Minnesota soldiers busy on two fronts. (Photo by Shutterbug Paula) |
Food for the soldiers consisted of hardtack and dried vegetables. |
Muzzle-loaded rifles were demonstrated for the thousands who attended the day-long event. |
Interestingly, the first group to be called to action in the
Civil War was the
First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It all happened because
Minnesota Governor Alexander Ramsey was in Washington D. C. when the war broke out and was first to
promise aid to the federal government to preserve the union. At the start of the conflict, there were 35 states. By war's end, there were 36 states total in the country. Many more were added later to give us 50. |
On this day in 2010: Mark and Paula saw
friends on Gilbert Lake.
Details On this day in 2009: It was a fun day in and around Brainerd, Minnesota. Details |
Quote of the day: It is amazing what we can learn from these history lessons. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
