The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Monday, June 13, 2011:  We are looking back at an F2 tornado with winds in excess of 100 mile-per-hour came through the southeast corner of Brainerd, Minnesota, on this day ten years ago....June 13, 2001.  Mark is standing by the wreckage of a 180-foot broadcast tower at the KLIZ Radio transmitter facility.  A small building at the base of the tower was tipped over as well.

The center tower, in this three-tower array was still standing, along with the north tower.  However, a guy line on the south tower was snapped when the south tower fell on the line.  The black spot in the tower at about 100 feet was a tower climber going up to reattach the wire.  Is that a job you would want?  To the right is another view of the fallen south tower.

No one was killed by the tornado that day, but 20 homes were destroyed and about 50 others were damaged.

Starting at 8:30 PM that night, the entire city of Brainerd was without power.  The outage lasted until almost 10 PM the next evening.

Power crews worked through the night.  They had to replace a 3/4 mile stretch of overhead power line going west into town and another 1/2 mile of power line going north into town.  It was a real mess.

A more recent image of the three KLIZ towers just before sunrise on September 8, 2007.
