May 17, 2010: We (Mark and Paula) drove north from Deerfield, Michigan, and stopped at Frankenmuth. It is sometimes called Michigan's little Bavaria. We decided to dress like the locals so no one would know who we were. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
Here is the local Bavarian village shopping area. It is a very popular spot in the summer. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
The shops were numerous and very interesting. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
Paula posed with the Three Stooges...does that mean there now are four stooges? Click on the photo for a larger view. |
What town like this would be complete without a main street clock with life-size figures? Click on the photo for a larger view. |
Lunch was at the Bavarian Restaurant. They are know world-wide for their chicken dinners. The recipe is the best we have ever had....outside of Gilbert Lodge of course! Excellent food and excellent service. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
Then it was off to Mackinaw City, Michigan, at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge. This five-mile-long structure was opened in 1957 and is quite a site to see. The Mighty Mac, as it is called, not only links Upper and Lower Michigan, but it divides Lake Michigan from Lake Huron...two of the five Great Lakes. Can you name the others? Answer: Lake Superior, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
The nearby Mackinac Point Lighthouse stood guard over the water since 1889, long before the bridge was built. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
Crossing the bridge was a great experience being 199 ft above the water. The water is 595 feet deep at mid-span of the bridge. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
There is the signpost up ahead. What wonders and mysteries will the dynamic duo of Mark and Paula face tomorrow? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode. Click on the photo for a larger view. |
Quote of the day: Lake Michigan looks like a big place. Mark |
