The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

May 25, 2009:  It was Memorial Day in Brainerd, MN, and across America.  Members of the various military veterans organizations conducted ceremonies honoring fallen heroes.  In Brainerd it was on the Laurel Street bridge across the Mississippi River.  A huge flag flew from a ladder truck of the Brainerd Fire Department.                 A wreath was thrown into the Mississippi River and then there was a 21-gun salute.

Not long later, veterans and the public assembled at the All Veterans Memorial in Brainerd to pay tribute again to all fallen servicemen and servicewomen.       A hauntingly beautiful rendition of Taps was played by a bugler....a local military veteran.

The Brainerd High School Band marched and played music.  Included in the arrangement were Battle Hymn of the Republic and America.         Two American soldiers were seen walking along a path into the cemetery that day.  We thank them for service to their country.

Evergreen Cemetery is filled with testaments to our country's men an women who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom that we enjoy today.           Ceremonies at the speakers' stand renewed our dedication to our country and to the flag.

Thought of the Day:  When in England at a fairly large conference, retired U.S. General Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if the U.S. plans for Iraq were an example of empire building by the U.S.  General Powell answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those who did not return."  It became very quiet in the room.
