Saturday, December 16, 2023: Mark and Paula stopped at the American Museum of Science & Energy at Oak Ridge, TN. It was here during World War Two that nuclear materials were refined so atomic bombs could be made. Thousands of people were employed in this secret project on a 59,000 acre site. It was mostly women who ran the equipment, which requred almost constant attention. Here is just one of the remaining machines. For perspective, more people were killed in one night of fire bombing in Japan than died in either atomic blast. It took two atomic bombs to get the Japanese to surrender. They would not have given up otherwise. The bombs saved many thousands of lives. |

Speaking of technology, Paula made
friends with this robot! |
Then there was a high-voltage
demonstration that could make hair stand on end, and it did! |
Quote of the day: An interesting place. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
