Wednesday, January 9, 2019:
Mark had been telling his friends that he would get at repairing some old radios until the snow flew. Well, the time had come. He grabbed his trusty soldering iron and started working on a 1950 vintage Hallicrafters S-40B Communications receiver. It covers 540 KHz, at the bottom of the AM broadcast band, to 54 MHz, just below channel 2 TV. |
|
Repairing almost any piece of electronic equipment starts with a
schematic diagram. It is like a road map of what goes where. A lit magnifying glass helps too. |
|
Some resistors and capacitors needed to be replace along with
one tube after the eight had been tested. |
|
Like many old radios, the dial cord failed with age. It connects
the tuning knob with variable capacitors. Mark picked up some braided fishing line at Mills Fleet Farm and set out to restring the tuning assembly. It took two hours, but he got it working with Paula's help. There were a few #%&#!* words along the way too. |
|
In the end, it came to life and even picked up a shortwave broadcast station in Africa. |
Quote of the day: It was an interesting experience. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
