Thursday, June 29, 2017:  Deep Diver Paula found herself at the Minnesota School of Diving SCUBA shop in Brainerd.
Dive helmets are a thing of the past for recreational divers, but there is one on hand for everyone to see at the shop.

This is Paula's opportunity to swap stories with her dive friends while signing up for a fun dive that night with others.

Dive shop employee Kersten was busy filling tanks with about 3200 pounds of pressure.

Dive Master Tim Gack showed off the three-stage air compressor that can produce 4500 pounds per square inch of air pressure.

Decisions, decisions.  It was finally decided to go to Wombat Point, near Crosby, MN, for the evening dive.

The van was full, but they kept shoving gear in until they were good to go.

Roads in the dive site area are poor, at best.  Lots of water and deep pot holes.

Dive shop owner Todd Matthies explained the nuances of underwater signaling to new divers.
There is a lot to learn and understand about this sport to stay safe.

It took about a half hour for divers to get suited up and into the water.
Paula used a dry suit that night, but will switch to a wet suit as the water warms up...hopefully soon.

Dry suits offer more flexibility and freedom of movement, but the diver gets wet .

Meanwhile, Tim was topside cooking for the divers whom he knows will come back hungry after their underwater experience.
Watch it, Tim, the fire could get away from you!

Divers returned after an hour in the water.  Paula was thumbs-up on this one.
She has 650 dives to her credit in about 20 years.
Mark says he should have checked her feet before marrying to find if there is webbing between her toes.

Some went for two hamburger patties in one bun.  A good choice for a hungry diver.
Hurry up guys, the food might be gone by the time you get to the food area!

Then it was time to swap stories/lies about the fish they saw.
A realist will tell you that fish look larger underwater than they actually are.  Paula will tell you that is bunk.

They returned to the dive shop.  Mark Johnson was all smiles after his tank was filled with air.
He is just waiting for another chance to go diving.

So, what did Paula see down there?

She captured a 30 second video.

Quote of the day:    Diving is a great hobby for those who don't mind getting wet.  Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
