December 10, 2015: It was a bit of a rainy day when Mark and Paula toured the Congdon Mansion, also known as Glensheen in Duluth, Minnesota, on the north shore of Lake Superior. Construction started in 1905 and was completed in 1908. With 27,000 square feet, it has 39 rooms, 25 of them with decorated Christmas trees in December. The estate includes 7.6 acres of land. Costing $854,000 back then, it is worth an estimated 90 million dollars today. |
There is a water fountain on
the lake side of the house. The Carriage House" is
pictured on the right. Horses were soon replaced by
automobiles. |

One of the many rooms.
There were nine servants for the up to nine family residents and
guests. |
The library is an impressive room. What you
would expect for that time in history. |
This is the breakfast
nook. It was decorated to be a year-round garden. |
|
Dinner was served at this table which
can be made longer with additional leaves. |
|
There was the latest in technology
including an intercom system and push-button electric light switches.
Very progressive for the year 1908. Because electricity was new, gas lamps were at the same locations as electric lamps. |

Glensheen as it was back in 1908.
It was donated to the University of Minnesota in 1979. Mark remembers going there at age six for a birthday party. His family moved out of town when he was seven so he lost touch with the Congdons. |
Quote of the day: Glensheen holds fascination for a lot of people. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
