The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Saturday, February 28, 2015:  Mark and Paula headed to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore along the south shore of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin.  The plan was to walk on the ice along the shore, like so many other people that day to see ice caves.

The temperature that morning was 4 degrees below zero with a wind chill of 20 below.
It warmed to 17 degrees above at the end their three hour experience.  The wind chill put it at about 3 degrees.

There were a number of ice heaves that had almost completely clear sheets of ice sticking up at odd angles.  Must be clean lake water.

The first ice formations were spotted some 1.1 miles east along the shore.  These were formed by underground water seeping out of the rock face.

Many were gigantic and a wonder to see flowing water, frozen in time.  Keep going, Paula, you have another mile and a half to go
before you can turn around and go back.
The weather has to be just right for these to form.  It is different every year.  There is nothing to see some years.

There was Mark, taking photos of the ice.  Watch out, Mark, that ice can fall!  He isn't afraid of anything.

There were ice caves along the way too.  Paula was brave enough to go in several.  Most photographs showed Mark and Paula with their mouths open in awe at the sights.  Paula is seen here with anti-slip spikes on the bottom of her boots.

Here is a big one with a huge ice waterfall inside.  It makes a person feel small.

This one is called "keyhole." There is an eight-foot diameter hole in it. Every other person had a camera in hand that day.

There was ice everywhere.

Chef Paula thought ahead to bring hot
Cocoa.  A good choice after spending
three hours on the ice!
Traffic was backed up two miles in both directions from the ice entrance when they left at 11 AM.  Later in the day it was backed up four miles.  Imagine that, people had to walk as much as four miles just to get to the starting point.  News reports stated that some 11,200 people saw the ice caves that Saturday and Sunday.

Just 17 days until St. Patrick's Day.

Quote of the day:    An awesome sight to say the least!   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
