Monday,
February 2, 2015: Ron Grogg, a historian with the
Minnesota Historical
Society gave a presentation on what it was to be a doctor in the
1820s, almost 200 years ago. He played the part of
a Major McCann, a U.S. Army Doctor at
Fort
Snelling from that time period. The fort is located in what is
now the Twin Cities. |
Mr. Grogg gave his talk to a near spell-bound audience at the
Brainerd
Public Library.
He showed off "tools of the trade" from back then. The black object on the left with two bell-shaped ends was an early stethoscope. McCann was a U.S. Army doctor and was doing "state of the art" healing. |
Then he moved on to tools for operating on patients, which often took
the form of amputating a limb.
There was no anesthetic in those days to kill pain. Ouch! A patient could bite into a wooden stick, which offered little relief. Blood letting was a common practice back then. It resulted in killing more patients than it saved. |
Quote of the day: Thank goodness things have changed a lot in 190 years. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
