The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Friday, July 25, 2014:  Mark and Paula attended the annual Brainerd Relay For Life a the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds.

Local royalty was there too.  The event raised money for cancer research and to help those who are going through cancer treatment.

Luminaries (paper bags with sand and a candle in the bottom) were decorated with names of those who suffered from or died from cancer.
Mark's mother June was one of them as were Paula's grandmothers Mabel Timman and Elsie Daniels.

Even Baxter Mayor Darrel Olson was there along with other people who were glad to be cancer-free after treatment.

Hundreds of people walked the circuit with many hundreds of luminaries along the way.

Then there was the balloon release...to the awe and shouts of the crowd.

It is tradition for someone volunteer to give up hair so a cancer victim can have a wig.
In this case it was Loni Burnard of Nisswa, Minnesota, who gave her hair to this worthy cause.

Then sunset came and the event continued.

The Rockin' Hills Band played while people danced.

One of the many groups that night.

Then the luminaries were lit to go late into the night.

Quote of the day:  Good to see people banding together to conquer cancer.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
