Historic Fort Snelling in the Twin Cities held a
World War II weekend.
Local re-enactors gathered to show the public what it was like to be in the U.S. military during that conflict. Yes, the young man on the right was too young to have served then, but he likes the uniform. |
Fully restored vintage vehicles from that era were on
display for everyone to see. They may be in better condition than when
they were new. |
Soldiers used walkie-talkies to communicate
back then. They were very innovative for their time. |
Flag signaling was pretty much gone by World War II.
Some used Morse Code.
|
A 1940 vintage car along with a chart showing Morse Code and how to
decode it. |
A sailor liked
this staff car. Nicely restored....from 70 years ago. |
Lucky Strike cigarettes were very common back then....a
favorite of most soldiers. |
A map
of "Fortress Europe." This soldier is pointing to Berlin, Germany,.....where
the real trouble started. |
These though guys look like they
are ready for almost anything. |
Soldier accommodations back then were generally not this good,
but radios were everywhere. |
Some of today's soldiers showed up to see what was going on
including this bayonet exercise. |
The Red Bull Jazz Band played to the delight of the public. |
There was a re-enactment of a Bob Hope radio show/road show
for the troops including the
Andrews Sisters
who were from Minnesota. Vintage video Great entertainment for everyone. |
There was plenty of dancing to go along with the music and
singing. Very well done. |
Quote of the day: Everyone needs to know about World War II. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
