Monday, June 16, 2014:
There were formal ceremonies in Brainerd marking the 100th
anniversary of the grandstand in Gregory Park, city hall, and the fire hall. Politicians and other dignitaries gave speeches, as you would expect. |
Brainerd Mayor James Wallin was there with a plaque to go with
a 50-year time capsule, which was buried near city hall that day. The capsule contained a few items from today and one gigabyte of computer data about the city in 2014. Mayor Wallin commented that he remembers when he threw one of the first shoves of dirt when city hall was built in 1914! |
Local entertainer Cleo Kuelbs led those present in singing
America the Beautiful. On the right you see master of ceremonies Guy Doud. He was Teacher of the Year some time ago. |
Plenty of cake for the celebration. |
About one hundred folks turned out for the ceremony including
this happily retired couple. |
Even a farmer showed up in his 1920s Ford truck. |
The Brainerd Fire Department opened its doors so anyone,
including kids, could see and even try on firefighting equipment. It looks like this lad wants to be a fireman when he grows up. |
Later there was music by a local ethnic band. |
Quote of the day: Brainerd is rightfully proud of its heritage. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
