Monday,
May 26, 2014:
Memorial Day. It was a beautiful 75 degree day.
Folks gathered for ceremonies honoring Americans who fought and died for our country. |
A wreath was thrown in the Mississippi River from the Laurel Street bridge in honor of sailors who died. |
Then it was off to the All Veterans Memorial where another
ceremony was held. The special guest was 94 year old Walt Straka. He is the last remaining survivor of the Bataan Death March in 1942. Walt's family is very proud of him. |
Another gathering was held at the Brainerd National Guard
Armory. More reminders of the death march. |
|
A parade to Evergreen Cemetery began at 10 AM.
Lots of people gathered to see the event. |
|
Then hundreds moved to Evergreen Cemetery for formal
ceremonies marking Memorial Day. Even Girl Scouts were there to hand out programs. |
|
Miss Minnesota, Rebecca Yea recited the Pledge of Allegiance. |
Crow Wing County Veterans
Service Officer was the main speaker. He recited the In
Flanders Fields poem and even sang a song. Kathleen Thorson was this year's Voice of Democracy winner. She gave the Gettysburg Address. Well done! Other speakers included master of ceremonies Dick Lyscio, Chaplin Susan Edwards, Brainerd mayor Darrell Olson, Baxter mayor James Wallin, Crow Wing County commissioners chair Rosemary Franzen, Evergreen Cemetery president John Boeder. The Brainerd High School Band was under the direction of Mr. Chris Fogderud. |
Taps were played earlier in the day by Marty Judd. Then at this ceremony by the Brainerd High School Buglers...with echo. |
Honor Guards
Matt Gigenbach and Dave Meyer
from the Brainerd
Veterans of Foreign Wars. They show up at many funerals each year along with events like this. Thanks, guys! |
