The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Friday, May 9, 2014:

Big time in downtown Nisswa, Minnesota.

Hundreds gathered for a community picnic in celebration of the 67th Annual Governor's Fishing Opener.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton gave a speech to the assembled crowd.

He admitted that others catch more and larger fish than he does.

As it turns out, he caught nothing, but Lieutenant Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon caught four fish including a 23 inch long walleye starting at 1 AM, just an hour after the fishing season officially opened on Saturday morning.

It was stated in one of the many speeches that night that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day.  If you teach him how to fish, he will spend all his money fishing for the rest of his life!

An estimated that 500,000 anglers cast their lines in the water on the fishing opener.

WCCO Television was there with live newscasts done by News Anchor Frank Vascellaro and Meteorologist Chris Shaffer.

Even the camera operator had a WCCO jacket on.

It wasn't long before Frank and Chris spotted Mark in the crowd and rushed over to have a photo taken with him.

Those lucky guys!

Mark is a WCCO Weather Watcher.  He does reporting when bad weather occurs.

Anglers were flying in while music was filling downtown Nisswa.

Even the Minnesota Golden Gopher mascot showed up to show off.

Nisswa is known for turtle races during the summer months.

Deep Diver Paula likes turtles.

She sees them while SCUBA diving near Crosby, Minnesota.

Even local royalty and their entourages wanted to be on this website.

The things we have to do!

Quote of the day:  Fishing opener in Minnesota is a fun time.   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
