Tuesday,
January 7, 2014:
There were three nights of clear skies and 20 degree below zero temperatures at night with 10 below zero temperatures during the day. Public schools throughout the state were closed for an unprecedented two days in a row. People hunkered down for the duration. Snow does not often fall when it is that cold. The atmosphere can't hold much moisture then. Wednesday, January 8 update: This was the fourth morning in a row with 20 degree or more below zero temperatures. Wind chills have lowered that temperature to 50 below zero at times.

The cold came as a near-perfect storm of epic proportions "nailing" Minnesota. (Not really that bad, but fun to say it and looks good in print!) The weather was a combination of a jet stream in just the right place and January weather in Minnesota. Some described it as a Polar Vortex, an Arctic Blast, a Canadian Zephyr, beastly cold, stark cold and stupid cold! Mark told the story from years ago about he walked to school in the winter. It was two miles uphill both ways. |

Warming to the 20's above zero is forecast for
later in the week. Finally some sanity to all of this. For perspective, there was a winter in Brainerd during the 1970's when temperatures stayed below zero day and night for a month. It happens. |
Quote of the day: You can't convince me that we have global warming! Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
