The life and times of Mark and Paula Persons

Wednesday, July 3, 2013:

Deep Diver Paula was at the Minnesota School of Diving shop in Brainerd.

She was getting ready to SCUBA dive that evening.

Dive shop guru, Bill Matthies explained the tank-filling hardware to a diver.  Paula had her air regulator adjusted by Todd Matthies.

This gentleman brought an underwater camera valued at over $10,000.

Hope the water-tight case works as designed!

Then it was off to Connecticut Two-Bit, part of the Huntington Mine pit near Riverton, Minnesota.
It is about 15 miles east of Brainerd and has long since turned into a lake after it was abandoned by miners.
There was a thorough dive briefing followed by suiting-up.
Most wore wet suits.  Some 24 divers went out that night.

Soon, Paula was ready to go with her dive partner.

They operate in pairs or trios as a safety measure.

Into the water they went until all that was visible was bubbles.

Minnesota Loons were heard, but not seen that night.

Darlene Matthies was on shore cooking hamburgers and bratwurst for hungry divers.

She is a Dive Master too.

The way it works is that the cook is always a Dive Master so that that person can help out in case of an emergency.

Tired, but none the worse for the wear after 44 minutes underwater.

Paula saw two really big northern fish underwater.

How big were they?

Paula consulted a lake map to figure out where she was.

Then she couldn't resist a cheese-filled Bratwurst.

Great stuff!

The dive crew was caught swapping stories about the size of the fish they saw.

Even bigger than the ones Paula saw?

So, what did Deep Diver Paula see while underwater?

Well, for one thing, she saw this rock bass.

Further down she found this northern.

Very interesting.

Then it was back to the shop to fill out dive logs and tell more lies about what they saw that evening.

Paula is a regular frogman frogwoman!

Quote of the day:  Paula really likes diving.  She was probably a fish in a past life!   Mark    < Back to previous story Ahead to next story >
