Thursday,
December 11, 2014: Mark and Paula headed to Duluth, Minnesota, on a frosty morning. They saw this train headed from Duluth to North Dakota for another load of coal. |
The Duluth shipping harbor was still open for the season.
This bulk carrier was headed out and may have been carrying coal from the train. This one is 656 feet long with a 20,000 ton carrying capacity. The port normally closes in the middle of the winter because of ice. |
Another ship was coming into port as dusk
approached. This one is 768 feet long with a carrying capacity of over
25,000 tons. In the background on the right is the South Pier Inn. More on that later in the story. |
The rear engine compartment and crew cabins were lit and
looked warm on this cold day. Ice sheets on the surface of the water were easily pushed aside by the mighty ship with loud cracking sounds. |
This is the South Pier Inn where Mark and Paula stay when
visiting Duluth. It is a wonderful vantage point to see ship traffic.
That evening, the Dynamic Duo of Mark and Paula dined at the
Dubh Linn Irish Pub. It is a
popular local spot. |
Mark was making a phone call in a British phone booth while
Paula was having a good time with a handsome waiter/bartender. Hmmm.....
There was music too. Live music is the best, according
to Mark.
Back at the room, Paula was checking email on her tablet
computer in front of a fireplace in their room. The Aerial Bridge was lit in golden color that night. Paula was also looking up things to do while in Duluth. Stay tuned to this exciting blog to find out what she discovered! |
Quote of the day: Duluth is a fun place to visit. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
