Friday
August 29, 2014:
It was just after 6 AM when a strong weather system moved across Brainerd. Wind, lightning, and hail hit the area with a vengeance. Rain totaled two inches in one hour. |
It wasn't long before power was out
over half of the city of Brainerd and many outlying areas. No
street lights in many areas. Crow Wing power had 7000 customers without power for most of the day and some for several days. Gilbert Lodge was also affected. Four outages throughout the morning resulted in the automatic backup power generator running a total of 1.5 hours. |
It didn't take long before utility
crews converged to figure out what needed to be done.
|
Signs and trees were blown down, but
there were no serious injuries reported. Classes were cancelled at Central lakes College and the YMCA. |
Downed trees were quickly handled by
local residents with chainsaws. Yes, you could hear chainsaws everywhere for most of the day. |
Crews were out working to put downed
power lines back up.
|
Power poles were lying at angles in a
number of places. |
The city's main water tank had been
drained for renovation work. A lightning hit causing the main
water pump there to fail. City water pressure dropped very
low. Then, there was a water pipe break. It was just a coincidence. That caused an alert for residents not to drink the water for a week! |
Things started to get back to normal
by afternoon. An interesting day to say the least. |
Quote of the day: Just a little extra spice in our lives. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
