A lot goes on behind the scenes to make Memorial Day
ceremonies a reality in Brainerd. |
The Memorial Day Committee meets starting in March each year. Each meeting starts with the Pledge of Allegiance. Guest speakers and dignitaries need to be lined up. There are three sheets with many many details to be checked and double checked. |
The master of ceremonies for many
years has been Dick Lysico. Jane Wayt is one for details. She spends a lot of time on the phone making it all happen. Jan Lambert, not pictured here, is the president of the committee. |
Boy Scouts put up flags each year at Evergreen Cemetery
starting at 6 AM on Memorial Day and take them down at 6 PM. Some 140 flags are put up in the cemetery and 97 flags are put on the fence. Those on the fence are coffin flags donated by families of deceased service members. Each one has a name and there is a name plaque with each one on the other side of the fence. Matching them up is no easy job, but it is the right thing to do. |
Quote of the day: Glad the Memorial Day Committee is remembering the fallen. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
