It was
Discover Aviation Days
at the Anoka/Blaine airport on
the north side of the Twin Cities. Always a fun event, it drew thousands of spectators to see planes in action and on the ground. These are North American T-6 Texan planes which were used as trainers during WWII. A real crowd pleaser. |
One of those planes was this one with its happy pilot.
Obviously a U.S. Navy plane, everyone like the Popeye art. |
Plenty of World War II re-enactors along with cars from that
era as well. They really love dressing up and being photographed. |
Then
General
Douglas MacArthur was touring the place with a World War II veteran. A
very imposing sight. |
Stars and Stripes reporters were there, WWII style, to tell
the story too with their typewriters. |
Yes, living during WWII was often in tents. No one
complained much....that was the way it was. |
Fast-forward to the 1960s. A
Grumman Albatross came across the field at low altitude. The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation is sometimes referred to as the "Grumman Iron Works" because their planes are so sturdy. |
The OV-1 Mohawk is high-tech surveillance airplane. It
saw U.S. Army service from 1959
to 1992. Mark wore a U.S. Army green T-shirt while pointing to a map of Vietnam where he was stationed in 1968 and 1969. His job was to keep the radios and other electronic gear repaired and working on this model plane with the green paint scheme. Later Mohawks were painted lighter colors for desert work. Now retired from military service, this plane is in the hands of private individuals who are usually members of the OV-1 Mohawk Association. The American Wings Air Museum at Blaine is also has some of these planes. |
Troops of today were there too showing their equipment.
Thanks for your service. |
Mark left at 3 PM about the time it started
raining. Yes indeed, it rained big time. Traffic was slowed to 30 miles per hour or less for 30 miles on Highway 10. Summer weather! Some 3,85 inches of rain were measured in Brainerd that day. The average for May is only 3.0 inches, which had already been met this year before the storm. |
Quote of the day: Lots to see and experience at an air show like this. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
