May 18, 2013: The
Voice of
America radio station is a stunning structure to see day and night. It was
built during World War II to fight Nazi propaganda by
transmitting radio programming from the United States to Europe on short-wave frequencies, which were
received on most radios at the time. The center high-rise part is a guard tower, which was manned by military personnel all during the war. |
|
A sign in the entry tells how the facility was a wartime priority. It became known as the station that, "told the truth" about what was going on in the world. People came to rely on VOA for accurate news instead of the slanted news from their own country's government-run stations during the cold war. Often described as being at Bethany, Ohio, it is really at West Chester, between Dayton and Cincinnati. |
|
The control room was impressive, handling
transmissions in six languages simultaneously on six different frequencies. Manned 24 hours a day, it was a busy place. |

Mark headed straight for a transmitter. This one has 250,000
watts of output power and replaced the original 1942 model that made 200,000
watts of RF power.
When the antenna gain is figured in, the effective radiated power was 2.2 megawatts, which gave excellent coverage into Europe and surrounding areas day and night. Mark remembered hearing these transmitters from when he was just a youngster in Minnesota and Wisconsin. There were a total of six transmitters on site, but this is the only one left since the facility closed in 1994. The site is now a museum...a testament to 50 years of service to the world from the United States. The Voice of America continues sending programming to many parts of the world via local stations and the Internet. |
Quote of the day: The Voice of America tells the world about freedom and the United States. Mark | < Back to previous story | Ahead to next story > |
