 Friday, August 15, 2025: The Lake Vermillion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park. This is 20 miles from Ely and 30 miles from Virginia, MN.  Tours are given regularly by park employees and retired miners.  The equipment is dangerous.   The tour guide said no one was killed on the job of extracting ore from the 2341 feet deep mine. It operated from 1884 until 1962 yielding some of the richest iron ore in the world.   This is a piece of the cable used to run the elevator to the 2300+ (almost 1/2 mile) depth. The underground portion of the mine was closed for repairs when Mark and Paula visited. |
